"Many Photos" - Brussels is ready to give the UK more time for Theresa May to hold new talks over a soft Brexit

BRUSSELS last night signalled it is ready to grant Britain more breathing space to allow talks between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn on a soft Brexit.

Council chief Donald Tusk said the bloc would be “patient” after the PM asked for a further extension of Article 50 to hold cross-party negotiations.

In response to the announcement, he said: “Even if, after today, we don’t know what the end result will be, let us be patient.”

His remarks came after Emmanuel Macron said pivoting towards a Customs Union would be sufficient to unlock another delay to our departure date.

But EU diplomats last night warned Member States will insist Britain takes part in euro elections in return for an extension to May 22.

That is because otherwise such a delay would create an unavoidable cliff edge just the day before voters go to the polls across Europe.

One said: “No extension until May 22 will be granted unless they participate in the European elections. The elections are the real cliff edge now.

“The possibilities of no deal are – if possible – even stronger now.”

A second diplomat added: “There must be European Parliament elections in the UK. It’s now inevitable.

“May will need to produce a good reason to convince leaders of a short extension. It’s not very likely.”

The PM has said she is asking for an extension only until May 22 to avoid the UK having to take part in the elections.
