The Bristol-born architecture postgraduate, who was studying at Central Saint Martins in London, travelled to Canada in January 2018.
She lived in Montreal for three months before going to Gaspe on the east coast the following April.
Joythi purchased a sleeping bag and hitched south along the coast towards the small coastal town of Perce.
She was picked up by two strangers who dropped her in the town and were the last people to see her alive.
On April 9, her body was discovered on a beach near Perce by a paddle boarder, Avon Coroner’s Court heard.
Her belongings were found close by.
Paramedics assessed her and she was later declared dead later at hospital.
NO FOUL PLAY
A post-mortem examination found Ms Pillay had not consumed drugs or alcohol before her death.
A report read at her inquest in Bristol yesterday found that she likely drowned.
The conclusion by Canadian coroner Steve Poisson ruled out suicide or foul play.
Dr Peter Harrowing, assistant coroner for Avon, reached a concluded accidental death.
He said: “I am satisfied that there was no third party involvement in her death.”
Jyothi was curious, independent, and a talented young architect.
Dr Melanie Dodd
Friends, family and teachers paid tribute to Jyothi at the time of the tragedy.
She was described as “idealistic and smart” as well as “warm, friendly and caring” with “a great sense of humour”.
In memory of Jyothi, Central Saint Martins University established the Jyothi Pillay Memorial Prize.
It recognises architectural students with “talent, compassion and sensitivity.”
In a speech announcing the prize, Jyothi’s tutor Dr Melanie Dodd said: “Jyothi was curious, independent, and a talented young architect.

Members of Ms Pillay’s family did not attend the short hearing in Flax Bourton, near Bristol.
