A TEENAGER spared jail after attacking a car with a zombie knife is a is a known gang member who appears in violent YouTube rap videos.
Joshua Gardener, 18, is a “drill” rapper in a gang called “G Lane” who brag about access to shotguns and pistols in their videos.
Gardner, who is known to Croydon council’s gang unit, was filmed attempting to smash the driver’s side window of a car in broad daylight with the blade of a large combat knife.
According to a report in The Times, the attorney general’s office has confirmed it will review Gardner’s case after his let-off sparked widespread outrage among the public and members of the police force.
No evidence was presented to the judge relating to Gardener being listed on the Met’s gang matrix, a database of members and alleged associates, as a member of the G Lane gang, also known by their postcode CR7.
G Lane’s long running tit-for-tat war with CR0 rivals has resulted in multiple stabbings and murders, including 15-year-old schoolboy Jermaine Goupall, who died after being stabbed the leg by CR0 members.
Two videos openly available on YouTube show Gardener surrounded by rappers in facemasks and bandanas.
In one video, the lyrics including boasts of access to shotguns and Glock pistols. Gardner can be seen throwing gang signs.
A spokeswoman for the office of the attorney general said a decision on whether to review the sentence will made in the next 28 days.
She said: “We can confirm that we have received a request under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme for the case of Joshua Gardner. Only one request is required for us to review whether a sentence given was too low.”
Shocking dash cam footage showed Joshua Gardner, then 17, brandish the enormous blade on a busy south London road in May.
It shows the thug repeatedly hammering at the windows and doors as he threatened the driver, aged 19, who got out and ran away.
Gardner, from Thornton Heath, south London, was found guilty of attempted GBH and also admitted affray and having an offensive weapon on London Road, Croydon.
But an Old Bailey judge spared him an immediate jail sentence after hearing Gardner carried the knife following a ten-day kidnap ordeal in which he was held at gunpoint.
The row unfolded when the cyclist appeared to stop next to the blue Volkswagen Golf and peer into the car – with the vehicle then swinging out into the road.
The dashcam footage shows the car almost push the cyclist off his bike before becoming stuck in the line of traffic as it tries to drive off.
But the confrontation then exploded as the cyclist drew the huge blade from his waistband.
The furious cyclist can be seen kicking and punching the car repeatedly as the driver cowers inside.
The dashcam footage also captured the moment the enraged cyclist had managed to shatter the passenger window as two more men appear, apparently in support of the attacker.
But just as the glass gives way under the force of the cyclist’s fists, the teen driver can be seen jumping out of the car, running for his life.
Judge Anuja Dhir QC said: “There was an incident of kidnapping between about March 26 and April 2, so a relatively short period of time before you committed this offence.
“You were bundled into a car, and threatened with a gun because of a drug debt that a friend of yours had run up.
“You were then taken to a place referred to as a trap house for ten days and you were made to sell drugs to work off the debt.”
The kidnapping, said to be by a gang of men in their 20s, “reduced your culpability”, she told Gardner.
Judge Dhir said only the police officer in the case gave evidence during the trial but it was “clear” Gardner knew the victim.
She added: “You were seen to attack the car with your feet, your fists and with a zombie knife that you produced from your waistband.”
Gardner was in breach of a youth rehabilitation order for an attempted robbery at the time of the attack, she said.
He was given two years for the attempted GBH, one year for the affray and one year for possession of the knife, to run concurrently.
The sentence was suspended for two years and he was also told to carry out a rehabilitation order and 150 hours of unpaid work.
Gardner will also be subject to an overnight 12-hour curfew between 7am and 7pm for nine months and he must stay with his mum.
His let-off sparked fury online as serving police officers joined Twitter users expressing their concern.
Greater Manchester Police officer ‘Sgt K’ said on Twitter he had been left “speechless”.
Another police officer, Sgt Harry Tangy, tweeted sarcastically: “Well he won’t do that again”.
East Barnet Police’s Twitter account wrote about the decision: “Suspended Sentence??? If this is what the Courts are deciding, what message are we sending to other knife carriers.
“Shame on the decision makers for making London one of the worst places to live in for young people. If you possess a knife you go inside, no if’s no but’s……..”
A huge spike in knife crime has seen knife crime spiral out of control on London’s streets this year.
Fears have since been raised that the cyclist was wielding a zombie knife – a type of large combat knife that is often made in bright colours and that has serrated edges and emblazoned with logos, such as ‘zombie slayer’.
They appear to have grown in popularity after featuring in ‘zombie apocalypse’ movies – and this seems to qualify due to its size.
Croydon has been known as a hotbed of gang activity, with groups including Don’t Say Nothing.
Postcode wars have previously turned deadly with fears tit-for-tat violence has become more prevalent.
