Who was Bartolomé Esteban Murillo?

Murillo was born in December 1617, most likely in Seville although it is thought he could have been born in Pilas, a small Andalusian town in southern Spain.

He was the youngest son in a family of 14.

Instead of taking his father’s surname of Esteban, he used his maternal grandmother’s, Elvira Murillo.

He studied art in Seville under Juan del Castillo, who was a relative of his mother.

His early works showed a strong realist approach but he soon picked up other influences such as the Flemish painting and his style also took on a more polished style, in keeping with the tastes of the time.

When he was 26 he moved to Madrid where he probably became familiar with the works of Velazquez and other Flemish masters.

In 1645 he returned to Seville and married Beatriz Cabrera y Villalobos, who eventually bore him 11 children.

In the same year he painted a series of 11 canvases all depicting miracles of Franciscan saints which depicted his more mature style which seemed to mix realism with the spiritual world.

He also started on his first of many paintings of children, The Young Beggar.

After another period in Madrid, he once again returned to Seville where he founded the Academia de Bellas Artes.

This also sparked one of his most productive and creative periods, receiving many important commissions including the paintings for the Santa Maria la Blanca, which was finished in 1665.

He died in Seville in 1682, aged 64.

His style is said to have influenced the likes of Thomas Gainsborough and Jean-Baptiste Greuze.

What is a Google Doodle?

In 1998, the search engine founders Larry and Sergey drew a stick figure behind the second ‘o’ of Google as a message to that they were out of office at the Burning Man festival and with that, Google Doodles were born.

The company decided that they should decorate the logo to mark cultural moments and it soon became clear that users really enjoyed the change to the Google homepage.

In that same year, a turkey was added to Thanksgiving and two pumpkins appeared as the ‘o’s for Halloween the following year.

Now, there is a full team of doodlers, illustrators, graphic designers, animators and classically trained artists who help create what you see on those days.

Among the Doodles published in recent months were designs commemorating German scientist Robert Koch, Jan Ingenhousz (who discovered photosynthesis) and the 50th anniversary of kids coding languages being introduced.
