BRITAIN’S been hit by the first snowfall of the winter – and there’s even more on the way.
Parts of the country, including Exmoor, Wales, the Peak District and the Pennines, were blanketed in the white stuff while Surrey, Sussex, Kent and even London saw some flurries last night.
Forecasters say a further 3cm could fall today with up to an inch accumulating in Snowdonia, in Wales.
Snow has begun to settle on hills around London, including the Chilterns, Salisbury Plain, The Berkshire and Wiltshire Downs and parts of The Cotswolds.
The highest areas of the UK will see the most snow, though, including parts of the Pennines, The Cheviots and The eastern Highland and Grampians.
John Hammond, chief meteorologist for Weathertrending told The Sun Online: “It’s currently snowing over parts of Salisbury Plain, The Berkshire and Wiltshire Downs pushing into the higher parts of The Cotswolds later this morning.
“This afternoon this area may affect parts of South and Mid Wales. There may be temporary slushy coverings here, before dying out.
“Elsewhere the main focus is for the highest parts of the Pennines, The Cheviots and The eastern Highland and Grampians.
“By tonight, most of any snow will have turned to rain and largely died out.
“Later tonight and tomorrow morning, freezing fog patches may be a problem in a zone from SE England, through the Midlands, Wales and northwest England. Temperatures may locally fall as low as -5C.”
The Pennines have been heavily affected by snow and cars parked at the The Tan Hill Inn – Britain’s highest pub at 1732ft above sea level – have been covered by the white stuff.

Brian Gaze, director and forecaster for the Weather Outlook told The Sun Online: “It will be another cold and showery day. Snow is most likely over the Cairngorms and Grampians in Scotland, and possibly the Brecon Beacons in South Wales.
“Elsewhere there could be a few flakes of snow mixed into showers but it should tend to become drier and brighter in southern and central counties through the course of the day.
“It will be very cold tonight, especially in central and western areas where skies are most likely to clear. In one or two sheltered locations in the west temperatures could dip to -5C (23F).”
Icy winds from the East with gusts of up to 50mph will make the temperature feel around 3C today.
Meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “The hills and the moors will see a little bit of sleet and snow.
“More showers today in the south west, spreading up through Wales.
“Across the Midlands and northern and eastern England, it’s a much drier day.
“Once the fog’s cleared, it should be a lot brighter by the afternoon compared to Tuesday.
“It will still feel cold and there’ll be a brisk wind blowing across the south west and bringing the showers in here.
“It’s still in single figures, so it’s a lot colder than it was last week.
“Through Wednesday evening the showers will continue to spiral around – some coming in those north sea coasts.
