FORMULA 3 driver Sophia Floersch has fractured her spine in a crash during the F3 World Cup final in Macau that left multiple people seriously injured.
In horrific footage, the 17-year-old German’s car can be seen losing control at 170 mph and launching into the air over a rival’s car and into fences in the media section.
In the most recent development the 17-year-old has tweeted that she is fine but has confirmed she is set to undergo surgery.
She wrote: “Just wanted to let everybody know that I am fine but will be going into Surgery tomorrow morning.
“Thanks to the @fia and @hwaag_official @MercedesAMGF1 who are taking great care of me.
“Thanks to everybody for the Supporting messages. Update soon.”
And the head of the FIA has vowed to fully investigate the crash and help those affected by it
Initial medical reports after the accident released by her team say she sustained a spinal fracture from the collision.
Her car crashed into fellow racer Sho Tsuboi – who was also taken to hospital.
F1 legends Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button have both sent tweets of well-wishes to the young racer.
Alonso wrote: “All my thoughts are with Sophia Floersch after the accident at Macau. Let’s hope to receive positive news soon ! Keep strong ”
While Button wrote: “Sorry to hear that @SophiaFloersch has a spinal fracture but looking at the horrific accident she had today in Macau it could have been so much worse. #getwellsoonSophia”

The race was immediately red flagged after the incident – and not for the first time as one was waved for a pile-up earlier on during the event.
And after a delay of more than an hour the race was restarted.
The footage was taken by Twitter user VanGamerenF1 who was filming the race from one of the packed grandstands.
And many others in the stands have uploaded more shocking angles of the accident.
Three further individuals, a marshal and two photographers were also involved in the accident and have also been transferred to hospital.
And it’s clear the Motorsports starlet was very excited for the race – with numerous Instagram stories posted the night before.
Floersch is seen as one of the up-and-coming stars in Motorsports.
She previously raced in F4 – and made history in her debut race by becoming the first female to score points in an ADAC Formula 4 race.
She also broke records by becoming the youngest driver to win a Ginneta Junior Championship.
