But he ended up with nothing when the distinguished physician died in 2013.

She fell for Wendy Cook, a barrister 37 years her junior, with whom she formed a civil partnership in 2007, at the age of 78.

A new will gifted much of her estate to her new partner, documents at London’s High Court state.

Prof Gosden says he later discovered his mum’s home in Kennington, South London, now worth £1.25million, had been sold without his knowledge in 2010. But when she died there was just £5,000 left in her estate.

Prof Gosden says a trust scheme his mum set up in 2003 should have protected the house, or the sale money, for him and his family.

He and his wife, fellow Oxford Prof Jane Kaye, were appointed trustees, along with Ms Weddell.

The couple are suing solicitors he claims should have advised him to take the “protective step” of registering a restriction on the sale.

The solicitors deny being at fault and say Prof Gosden should have sued his mother if he was unhappy.

The case came before the High Court last week for a pre-trial review.

A full trial is expected to start this year. There is no claim against Ms Cook.
