A baby fighting for his life today after being attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier is less than a year old, according to shocked neighbours.

The baby was attacked at 1.47am on Sunday at a house in Yaxley, near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

The boy is currently in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with life-threatening injuries.

A 28-year-old-man and a 31-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and two Staffordshire Bull Terriers seized following the incident.

One neighbour who was woken by the police sirens has told how he witnessed the two people being arrested in the early hours of Sunday.

He also told how the residents of the house have two Staffordshire Bull Terriers which he describes as 'viscious'

He said: 'I have seen those dogs before and they are vicious and will show their teeth at anyone.

'I was woken in the middle of the night to sirens and bright lights and I was worried.

'I went outside and there were seven police vehicles, two police vans an ambulance and the paramedics. The police brought a man and a woman out of the house in handcuffs.

'Straight away the ambulance left the house with a police escort. I knew then that someone must be very badly hurt.

'I thought it was a domestic incident.'

Another neighbour said the new parents, both unemployed, were proud new parents. He said the dogs were 'always fine' with him.

The man, who didn't want to be named, said: 'He showed everyone else around here.

'He was showing people his new baby because he was so proud of it.

'I can't work out what happened.

'When he showed me the pictures, I said be careful because those dogs might not be used to the baby.

'I know what dogs are like when they get jealous.

'He said I will do.'

The arrested pair have been released on bail until December 15 but police say an investigation has been launched.

A police spokesman said: 'We were called by the ambulance service at 1.47am yesterday (Sunday, November 18) to an address in Yaxley, with reports of concern for baby boy who had been attacked by a dog.

'Officers and paramedics attended the scene and the baby was taken to Peterborough City Hospital before being transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, with life-threatening injuries.

'He remains in a critical condition.
