New photo Mum’s fury as disabled daughter, 20, told to stop clapping and singing at The Grinch after cinema-goers complain she’s making too much noise

A MUM is furious after she and her disabled daughter were ordered to stop clapping and singing while watching The Grinch at the cinema.

The mum said they were singled out by staff and slammed other members of the audience as “uneducated”.

Despite her age, Georgia has the mental age of six to 18 months and suffers from a rare developmental syndrome called MEF2C.

The film made her excited and she began clapping and singing to some music during the film.

Helen says a cinema manager then came and sat next to Helen and told her to “stop the clapping”.

Helen later fumed on Facebook: “Unfortunately, in 2018, some uneducated people this evening considered my daughter’s show of her delight and pleasure as unacceptable, and complained to the manager.

“There were young children in the audience who were excited about the film, excited about Christmas and showed this excitement by being noisy.

“But apparently, this behaviour is acceptable because it’s not “different”, and didn’t warrant the manager’s attention – yet my severely disabled daughter’s clapping did.”

Helen went on to describe how a cinema manager sat in an empty seat next to her and explained that some other viewers had complained about Georgia’s clapping.

She claims the manager asked if she could keep Georgia quiet, and she explained she could not, because her daughter “doesn’t understand”.

“He sat by me and said, “Can you stop the clapping?”. He called it ‘The clapping’. Not ‘her clapping’ but ‘the clapping’,” said Helen.

“I said no, I can’t. The only way I could stop my daughter clapping is by restraining her.

“Clapping is not a reason to restrain someone, and is actually illegal in these circumstances.

“But he persisted in asking me if I could do this or that, and eventually I asked him to leave me alone about three or four times. The last time I think the whole audience heard me.”

Helen, who is a full-time carer for Georgia, said she then decided it would be “safer” for she and her daughter to leave the cinema before the film ended.

But the mum said she left the film in tears, and added: “We were obviously not supported by management.

“If the complaining customers had turned nasty, my extremely vulnerable daughter would have been exposed to their anger without support from cinema staff.”

The mum and daughter were offered two complimentary tickets for their trouble – but Helen refuses to use them.

She added: “Georgia will never attend Vue cinema again. Her safety is compromised.

“The manager did also say when we were leaving that he “didn’t realise” – and I assume he meant he didn’t realise the extent of her disability.”

Helen also shared an email response sent to her privately by Vue’s Customer Services Manager, offering she and Georgia a private tour of the cinema.

The manager added that complaints of “disruption” are taken seriously.

The email read: “We were not aware until we entered the screen that the disruption complaint was due to your daughter clapping, or that she was disabled.

“Our staff are highly trained and are taught to deal with such situations with compassion and discretion.

“On this occasion, the manager who spoke with you in the screen feels he was sensitive and apologetic towards both you and Georgia.

“He also ensured that further complainants were made aware that we had a disabled customer in attendance.

“That said, you have clearly been unsettled by the issue and left the performance early.

“We would love to restore your faith in us as we pride ourselves on providing a safe and welcoming environment that is open and accessible to all.”
