BRITAIN should rethink its involvement with Interpol if the Russian candidate is chosen as its new boss, MPs from all parties declared yesterday.
Foreign Affairs committee chairman Tom Tugenhadt warned voting in Alexander Prokopchuk as the new president of the international policing organisation would be like putting “the assassin in charge of the murder investigation”.

And Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable said selecting the Russian would be an “absolute insult” to the victims of the Salisbury Novichok poisonings.
He suggested to the Commons the agency would become a “branch of the Russian mafia”.
Mr Tugenhadt added: “We are looking at the possibility of one of the henchmen of a mafia state, one of Putin’s appointees, taking over an international law based organisation.
“This is an organisation that Mr Prokopchuk himself has already tried to corrupt by using the so-called red notice system, a system for international arrest, for opponents of the Putin regime, for journalists.”

Businessman Bill Browder – a targeted Kremlin dissident – also warned picking the Moscow interior ministry veteran would politicise Interpol and see the role used to hunt down critics of the Russian president.
He said: “To put his representative in charge of the most important international crime-fighting organisation is like putting the mafia in charge.
“This is a perfect way for Putin to breathe the fear of God into all of his enemies so they know they can’t even escape Russia.”
Interpol have insisted the president is not in charge of day-to-day operations as head of the organisation, a position held by its secretary general. Foreign minister Harriet Baldwin yesterday confirmed the UK Government is supporting the acting president, South Korean Kim Jong Yang for president.
