The team that goes out is always a reflection of the manager’s character, always. Just like Man City going out is a reflection of Guardiola.
Cool, calm, in control. When it’s not going too well – OK, United made the last-16, but their league form is abysmal – it’s a reflection of where that manager is at that time. And there is no way Mourinho is handling the pressure on him.

Look at his transition from going to the Nou Camp and winning and beating Young Boys at home with a last-minute Marouane Fellaini goal. It really isn’t the in the same level of achievement, but he’s getting more and more out of control and aggressive as he goes.
It’s getting to the point where he realises his team is ordinary, so when they so succeed in something however benign, it’s almost like he can’t believe it himself and he turns around the everybody and says I told you so.
He’s back to those games, as a player that’s the bit that would concern you. I played with passionate managers but the key really was – somebody like Steve Coppell – he was never out of control. Ever.
It gave you so much confidence going onto the pitch that the man on the touchline had made all the right decisions, prepared you in a really calm way and that you were going to go and carry out his instructions knowing you were the best, that’s how we felt.
As a striker Mourinho’s reaction would anger me, but then again I wouldn’t have missed.

Whereas when you’ve got an erratic manager, you don’t put in controlled performances. You can’t say any of United’s are these days, they’re boring, but not controlled.
I think that whether it’s Mourinho or any other manager, their behaviour is vital and not always on the touchline, because the players will be seeing things on the training ground.
Kitson on Rashford's miss and THAT reaction
Mourinho’s reaction to the Rashford miss is borne of the frustration the Portuguese has towards a squad that he knows is not good enough to compete at the very highest level.
It is important to remember that everything Jose Mourinho says or does has a different meaning to a multitude of people that all revolves around his desire to ensure that everybody understands that the current woes at Manchester United are not all his fault.
This incident is a good example of that. Mourinho stood with his arms folded facing the main stand as if to say that he is hardly surprised by Rashford missing the chance. He was talking to the club’s owners very publicly in that moment.
As a striker Mourinho’s reaction would anger me, but then again I wouldn’t have missed.
If you look at his comments, he had a pop at Jurgen Klopp and Maurizio Sarri’s assistant, saying you don’t have to be crazy on the touchline.
He looks hypocritical now but he was hypocritical when he said that at the time because I seem to remember a young Jose Mourinho sliding on his knees at Old Trafford when Porto scored in the last minute to knock Manchester United out of the Champions League.
Latest Manchester United news

Mourinho knows it’s only what you do today that counts in football, it’s an immediate game, that’s how fans judge you. And yet he sits there in press conferences holding up three fingers to talk about his titles, talking to the United fans through the media about success he’s had with teams they don’t care about.
He’s waging a battle with the media, another one with the fans, he’s calling out his own players in public, saying he’s not getting the transfers.
All of that stuff is a recipe for completely disjointed performances which is what we’re getting from Manchester United at the moment.
