New photo John Lewis reveals how to decorate the PERFECT Christmas tree

With the festive season in full swing, Brits up and down the country will soon be dusting off their Christmas decorations and decking the halls.

If you're lacking in festive inspiration, look no further as a decorating specialist has revealed his ultimate tips for creating the most Instagrammable tree around - from the lights to the baubles.

Dan Cooper, Head of Christmas at John Lewis & Partners, advises buying your baubles in sets of six, positioning your decorations in a zigzag pattern, and wrapping lights around the trunk of the tree.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline as retailers brace for a boom in bauble sales this weekend, Dan said: 'We expect our customers will be making bold choices this Christmas and continue the trend for maximalism and colour that we are seeing in home decorating.

'We're anticipating seeing lots of pictures on Instagram and Pinterest of sublime, colourfully decorated trees, whether rainbow, or one solid block of colour positioned as a centrepiece of a room rather than decorated to blend in.

'This year's top selling baubles are the narwhal, an oyster and an octopus.'

Here, Dan shares his tips for the perfect tree:

1. Assemble with care

Take your time with prepping the tree, especially when using a real one. Always be sure to put the tree skirt [onto the stand] before inserting the tree, and pop a sheet of paper underneath to protect your floor from spilled water and dwindling pine needles.

2. Channel your 'inner glow'

If you're feeling really committed, my favourite tip when adding lights is to wind a warm set of lights through the core of the tree, this creates an amazing inner glow and helps light up those special baubles.

3. Don't hold back

I don't put less than 100 lights per tree on a full tree. LED lights are so effective and inexpensive so I'd recommend trying these. If you are not a fan of putting on lights, invest in a waterfall set - 640 lights cascading from the top of the tree on multiple threads will be enough for a 7ft tree.

4.  Order is key

When it comes to arranging your baubles, I always advise to buy in 6s, 8s and 12s. Put all the same, plains on first as your foundations and to position them in a zigzag down the tree to really draw the eye.

I always put my special, sentimental baubles on last, right in the eye line, for that final magic touch. Clips, stems and unusual shapes are another great way to give your tree texture and interest.

5. Do away with colour schemes

The biggest trend this Christmas is colour. Mixing, matching, co-coordinating and clashing. This year my favourite tree is the ombré rainbow tree as it really embodies positivity and inclusiveness. Much easier to create than it looks, I hope it encourages customers to experiment and be adventurous with colour this Christmas.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
