How are teams that finish level on points sorted in the Champions League?

Teams that finish level on points in the Champions League group stage are sorted by the following criteria:

  1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

  4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

  5. Goal difference in all group matches;

  6. Goals scored in all group matches;

  7. Away goals scored in all group matches;

  8. Wins in all group matches;

  9. Away wins in all group matches;

  10. Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);

  11. UEFA club coefficient.

How does that affect the Premier League teams still in the competition?

TOTTENHAM – Group B

Tottenham’s comeback victory over PSV Eindhoven kept them within a chance of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League – but it will be difficult,

Spurs will need to beat Inter Milan if they have any hope of reaching the knockout stages.

A draw would keep the Italians three points ahead, but after losing to them in the reverse fixture, they will remain behind them, no matter the results in the final match.

It would also mean they cannot catch Barcelona, who are currently six points ahead of the Londoners.

Even if Spurs beat Inter, they would still need to at least equal the Italians’ result in the final match – where it could still go down to away goals.

SunSport looks at the six permutations which will see Klopp’s men secure a passge through to the last 16.

1: If Liverpool win both of their remaining games against PSG and Napoli, they will go through.

3: If Liverpool beat Napoli by two goals in the final match, they will advance regardless of results elsewhere.

4: If Liverpool draw with PSG and beat Napoli by any margin, they will go through to the knockout stages.

5: If Liverpool draw both of their remaining matches, they will qualify if PSG fail to beat Red Star in the final game.

6: If Liverpool draw with PSG and lose to Napoli, they can still progress but only if Red Star fail to beat Napoli and avoid defeat against PSG.
