Logistics and freight is one of the UK’s most important industries, now employing 2.5million people and growing at around three per cent each year.

Overall, the logistics industry contributes £121billion to the economy each year and road freight alone shifts three-quarters of goods moved in the UK — including most of your Black Friday purchases.

But despite half of freight employers looking to recruit in the next 12 months, the sector faces a skills shortage, with 25,000 UK vacancies currently advertised.

So the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has started a campaign to widen the industry’s appeal, including getting more female staff — who make up just 22 per cent of staff in the industry.

Sally Gilson, of the FTA, said: “With the average age of a lorry driver now 48, the FTA believes the industry needs to adapt to attract a new generation of workers.”

As well as driving jobs, there are openings in sales, customer service, transport management and  planning. See https://fta.co.uk.

KEELY'S A SHINING EXAMPLE

KEELY PRIESTMAN went from PA to MD of female-led haulage firm Diamond Distribution.

The 33-year-old, left, was recently crowned   Freight Award winner at the  FTA everywoman Transport and Logistics awards.

Keely, from Oxted, Surrey, said: “I was an office manager in a freight firm that was put into administration.

“I decided I could do it myself. I started with just eight vehicles – but now have 18 and a turnover of over £2million. All my key  management staff are female and we encourage female apprentices to join the industry.

“I often get told  I don’t look like a trucker.  But I love the logistical challenge.

“More women are entering the industry and bringing more diversity.

“The jobs in logistics are not all greasy and grubby – there is  a vast range of very exciting careers.”

Sales job peril

WANT to grab an online Black Friday deal when the boss is not looking? Be careful – you could be risking your job.

Geoffrey Isherwood, legal services boss at employment experts Elas, said: “Employees can often spend long hours online trawling deals to get their Christmas shopping done on a budget, costing employers valuable time. These seemingly innocent minutes could lose you a client or your reputation.

“Employers should have policies in place for the use of office computers and electronic devices, as well as rules regarding the use of personal mobiles during work time.

“Breach of those policies is generally a disciplinary offence.

“Bosses should remind all employees of company policies.”

BE PROUD TO BE OUT AT OFFICE

NINE in ten LGBT workers do not feel confident to be fully “out” at work, according to inclusion consultant Gina Battye, pictured.

But she says: “For you to excel at work and enjoy your time there, it is important  you drop the mask and show up as the real, authentic, true you.

“Don’t let your creativity and talent be restricted by your sexuality or gender.”

Here, Gina explains   how to have the confidence to come out at work . . .

❶ Do not presume you know how people will react. Your preconceptions and judgments about them may be wrong.

❷ Set yourself boundaries – be clear on what you will and will not talk about.

❸ Be yourself. Remove the mask and strip away those layers to find the real you again.

❹ Seek out the allies, senior champions and role models. They are there to support you.

❺ Educate people whenever you can. Help your company to adopt good practice in the workplace and promote a culture of inclusion. Get involved with the LGBT+ Network Group at work, if they have one. If not, start one.
