A divorce court judge has ruled an ex-model must get £9m of her husband's £38m fortune but not who should get the the couple's dogs. 

Mr Justice Williams said the businessman and the woman had argued over the division of marital assets.

He said she wanted a £16 million lump sum of her estranged husband's fortune, while he had offered nearly £5 million.

The judge said 'the appropriate division of chattels, including the parties' dogs' was also on a list of issues he had been asked to decide on.

Mr Justice Williams concluded that the man should hand the woman a £9.3 million lump sum.

But he said arguments about the dogs should take place before a mediator.

He suggested that they should look for a mediator with 'experience of dogs'.

The judge has outlined his thinking in a written ruling after analysing the case at a private hearing in the Family Division of the High Court in London in October.

He said the pair could not be identified - and referred to them only as 'IX' and 'IY' in his ruling.

The judge said they were both English and in their fifties - and indicated that they had homes in France and England.

Mr Justice Williams also anonymised the dogs - referring to them only as 'B' and 'C'.

'The husband should make a lump sum payment to the wife of £9.31 million,' said the judge in his ruling.

'I believe that one dog is currently in France and one dog is in England.

'That seems to me to be fair.'

He added: 'If the parties wish to argue over their access to the other dog I would suggest that they place the dispute before a mediator or arbitrator; perhaps one with experience of dogs.'
