JOAQUIN Guzman was considered the “most powerful drug trafficker in the world” by US law enforcement officers and a 30-year hunt finally landed him behind bars.
‘El Chapo’ is currently standing trial in New York and authorities have discovered an even more powerful drug lord who’s NEVER been jailed to be the true mastermind behind the Sinaloa cartel.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration and local marines finally recaptured El Chapo, who has twice escaped from prison, in his native Mexico in 2016.
The 61-year-old crime lord had battled against being sent to America to face charges but lost the fight in January 2017 and is accused of smuggling over 155 tons of cocaine into the US.
But despite his incarceration, bloodshed is increasing and analysts have witnessed an increase in the cartel’s shipments to the States and a new face is thought to be responsible.
The real leader of the trafficking operation has been revealed as El Chapo’s former partner, 70-year-old Ismael Zambada, known as El Mayo.

It appears El Chapo served as ‘the poster boy’ for the world’s most-feared cartel for under El Mayo’s command, murders in Mexico rose 16% in the first half of this year.
While Sinaloa’s activity has escalated under El Mayo’s reign, he remains a ghost, using plastic surgery and disguises to evade capture.
Former DEA chief of operations, Jack Riley, who captured El Chapo, disclosed to the Mirror that he had no doubt who Sinaloa’s real crime boss was.
He says: “Mayo is the most powerful drug trafficker. I even think we have underestimated his influence and power in controlling the US drug market.”

El Mayo, a former poppy field worker, currently tops the DEA’s list of the world’s most wanted criminals with a £4million bounty on his head.
The multi-billionaire has been hunted by Mexican marines, police and DEA agents for over 40 years and El Mayo stays below the radar by never sleeping in the same place twice.
This is in stark contrast to El Chapo whose lavish lifestyle included his own zoo, three private jets, trips to Switzerland for anti-aging treatment and a £7.8million Acapulco beach house.
His excesses were disclosed by former cartel turned-government witness Miguel Angel Martinez, who told jurors that a “cocaine boom” in the 1990s fueled his spending spree.

Martinez told the jury El Chapo “had houses at every single beach. He had ranches in every single state.”
He is thought to have frequented the mountainous region shared by the states of Durango, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua, in an area in northwest Mexico known as the Golden Triangle.
According to El Chapo’s defence team, El Mayo allegedly paid £4.7million to President Enrique Pena Nieto, who has denied the allegation.

El Chapo’s defence lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, told jurors: “He’s [Guzman] blamed for being the leader, while the real leaders are living freely and openly in Mexico.
“In truth, he controlled nothing. Mayo Zambada did. Mayo Zambada kept paying the Mexican government, president after president, two in a row – and somehow he remains free.
“And who is the one that’s constantly being hunted down? It’s Guzman.
“[Government officials] were paid off to leave Zambada alone.”

Former Mexican president Felipe Calderon, who preceded Nieto, has continuously denied taking cartel money.
El Mayo originally seized control of the cartel with El Chapo after previous Juarez cartel leader, Amado Carrillo Fuente, died in 1997 after botched plastic surgery.
The Sinaloa cartel grew to build a £9billion-a-year international drug and human-trafficking empire.
Since El Chapo’s arrest, El Mayo has diversified the cartel’s business from cocaine and heroin to the opioid fentanyl.

But, as well as the loss of his partner, El Mayo has had to contend with the capture of two of his sons and his brother, Jesus Zambada.
Zambada, the cartel’s chief accountant for more than 15 years, was arrested in 2008 and is now helping the US’s case and stated that his brother and El Chapo were considered Sinaloa’s leaders.
