AUTHORITIES say more than a THOUSAND people are now missing as California’s raging wildfires leaves 77 dead.

Rescuers desperately searching for survivors last night discovered eight more bodies from the Camp Fire inferno that ripped through the north of the state.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said that a list of unaccounted people is “dynamic” but urged people to let officers know if they are safe.

Some of the people have been confirmed dead by family and friends on social media, others have been found safe, but authorities have not yet marked them as such.

And some, like Tamara Conry, say they never should have been on the list.

“My husband and I are not missing and never were!” Conry wrote Thursday night on a Facebook page dedicated to finding people from the fire zone in and around the incinerated town of Paradise.

“We have no family looking for us … I called and left a message to take our names off.”

The confusion stems from the difficulty authorities face putting together a tally of the missing as they pore through hundreds of reports filed by people who could not reach loved ones in the aftermath of a blaze that spread with astonishing speed last week.

It became the deadliest US wildfire in a century.

Sheriff Honea said: “The chaos that we were dealing with was extraordinary. Now, we’re trying to go back out and make sure that we’re accounting for everyone.”

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Miranda Bowersox said Friday that the list of people who are unaccounted for is not a real-time reflection of who is missing.

She said the office is distributing the names widely in the hope anyone on it might call in and say they’re OK.

“They might not be in the area anymore. There might be friends and family here who don’t know they left, that they went to another area,” she said.

President Donald Trump will travel to California on Saturday to meet with victims of the deadly wildfires that have scorched the state.

Hundreds have been made homeless after “devil winds” fanned rampaging fires which for the past week have been roaring over an astonishing 95,000 acres.

There is some relief on the horizon for the fire victims, with rain finally forecast over Thanksgiving.

Despite hopes of rain to come, Dr Joel N Myers, founder and president of AccuWeather, said: “While there is a chance for some meaningful rainfall next week, it is unlikely that we will see enough precipitation to end the fires across Southern California.

“There is a somewhat better chance for enough rainfall to diminish the fires in Northern California.”

The National Weather Service said the winds would slack off enough during the afternoon to allow firefighter to tackle raging fires.

But forecasters cautioned low humidity levels would keep danger levels elevated.

More than 100 National Guard troops have reinforced the search for remains in the once thriving communities.

But many of the California fire victims may never be identified because their dentist practice has burned down along with dental records.

The cause of the Woolsey fire remained under investigation.

Downed power lines and blown transformers have been blamed for several of the deadly fires that have burned around the state in recent years.

A landowner near where the fire began said Pacific Gas & Electric Company notified her the day before the wildfire that crews needed to come onto her property because wires were sparking.
