THE ‘Beast from the East’ is set to batter Britain with thundersnow, sleet and hail today as wintry weather could cause temperatures to plummet as low as -5C.
Forecasters say the chill will persist throughout the week as the extreme weather front blows cold air over from the continent.
Sleet, hail and snow are all forecast for skies this week – and it looks like nowhere will escape the freeze.
John Hammond, chief meteorologist for Weathertrending told The Sun Online: “As cold air arrives from the continent during Tuesday, there could be some sleet or hail almost anywhere as the showers turn heavy and possibly thundery through the day.
“We will see showers turning ‘wintry’ over the Downs, perhaps the Chilterns, and other hills of central and eastern Britain as we head into the night.”
The Met office has warned of brisk winds and frequent showers and said it feel cold “especially in the brisk easterly winds with gales around English North Sea coasts”

Met Office spokesman Steven Keates said: “It’s going to be colder than what we’ve been used to, obviously, considering it’s been balmy and mild as a whole.
“There’s going to be a day by day cooling off, with each day getting cooler than the previous.
“There will be some cloud and showers, but the biting wind will make it feel even colder than it is, particularly in the East.
“West is best in terms of the weather this week.
“There could be some snowfall in the more mountainous areas, the peaks, but we shouldn’t expect too much disruption.”
He added: “It’s going to be quite a shock to the system.”
The snow forecasts have even made some meteorologists optimistic that this year will see a White Christmas – just days after warning that space storms could soon cause technological catastrophe.

And the prediction for thundersnow comes after more inclement weather lashes the UK today.
Showers will move further inland from the East this afternoon as temperatures fall slightly from the weekend.
But a brisk easterly wind will make most places feel substantially colder than it has been in recent days.
More rain is expected today as well as more wind in most places.
