New photo Where is Chequers, how long has it been the Prime Minister’s country residence and where does the name come from?

CHEQUERS is a lavish country estate where the Prime Minister can let her hair down and unwind or entertain high-profile guests.

The residence dominated headlines after Theresa May secured her soft Brexit deal after marathon talks with Cabinet. Read on for more about this estate…

Where is Chequers?

Chequers is a country house near the village of Ellesborough in Buckinghamshire at the foot of the Chiltern Hills.

The mansion is about 40 miles to the north west of Central London.

It is a Grade One listed building used by the Prime Minister as a country home outside Westminster.

David Lloyd George was the first PM to use it.

Why is it called Chequers?

Chequers, or Chequers Court, dates back to 16th century.

The name Chequers is said to derive from an early owner of the manor of Ellesborough in the 12th century, Elias Ostiarius (or de Scaccario).

The name “Ostiarius” meant an usher of the Court of the Exchequer and scacchiera means a chess board in Italian.

Elias Ostiarius’ coat of arms included the chequer board of the Exchequer, so it is possible the estate is named after his arms and position at court.

The house passed through generations of the Scaccario family until it passed into the D’Awtrey family, whose name was eventually anglicised to Hawtrey.

A different explanation of the name is that the house is named after the chequer trees (Sorbus torminalis) that grow in its grounds.

There is a reference to this in the book Elizabeth: Apprenticeship by David Starkey, which describes the early life of Elizabeth I.

How long has Chequers been the PM’s residence?

Chequers has been the official country residence of the Prime Minister since 1921.

The home was given to the nation by Arthur Lee, First Viscount Lee of Fareham in 1917 with the intention of it being a country retreat for the sitting PM.

It was given to the nation when Prime Minister’s began to come from the middle classes rather than the landed gentry and therefore did not have country estates.

A stained glass window in the property bears the legend: “This house of peace and ancient memories was given to England as a thank-offering for her deliverance in the great war of 1914–1918 as a place of rest and recreation for her Prime Ministers for ever.”

What did Theresa May’s Cabinet decide about Brexit?

Theresa May summoned Cabinet ministers to Chequers to decide on plans for the future relationship with Brussels.

They all agreed the UK should remain in line with the EU on rules for all goods, though it would be free to diverge from bloc rules over services.

It is understood that all members of the Cabinet have signed up to the proposals and none of them have decided to quit.

It would also involve the UK paying “due regard” to European Court of Justice rulings relating to the rules Britain will share with Brussels, potentially softening the Prime Minister’s red line on the jurisdiction of judges in Luxembourg.
