THE Carabao Cup returns with some new faces in the competition for this season.
The reigning champions Man City are among those to join in the third round, along with their fellow Premier League sides playing in Europe.
What matches will have VAR in the Carabao Cup?
The Video Assistant Referee system returns to the Carabao Cup, after being used in the second round.
It continues as part of its trial to see the technology’s effectiveness in England.
VAR was also available in last season’s semi-finals and final between Manchester City and Arsenal.
For the third round, it will be used in the following matches:
- Manchester United vs Derby County
- Wolves vs Leicester City
- Arsenal vs Brentford
- West Ham vs Macclesfield
- Liverpool vs Chelsea
- Everton vs Southampton

What decisions is VAR used for?
THE video assistant referee can be called upon for four key on-field incidents.
These are:
- Awarding goals
- Penalty decisions
- Red card decisions
- Cases of mistaken identity
How does VAR work?
THE video assistant referee will liaise with the on-pitch referee to relay information on calls.
The video assistant referee – a top official who will be based at Stockley Park for the League matches – has access to every camera angle and goal-line technology cameras.
The VAR also has an assistant watching the game with them.
Will VAR be used in the Premier League?
The Premier League clubs voted against its introduction at the start of the season – but it was trialled during 15 matches recently.
No decisions were allowed to be made in those games, with only the system’s effectiveness of making calls for multiple matches at once.
Premier League officials hope to roll out the technology in all games next season
The system had great success at the World Cup in the summer, while it has also been used across Europe, including in Bundesliga and La Liga.
