New photo Waitrose will ditch 5p carrier bags by spring 2019

Waitrose is to stop offering small plastic bags for its loose fresh fruit and veg in favour of green alternatives.

It is also doing away with 5p throwaway carrier bags at tills, following other stores, in a new move against plastic waste and pollution.

The moves will prevent 63million carrier bags and another 71million fruit and veg bags - equivalent to 500million tonnes of plastic - from being handed out in stores each year.

Conventional plastic bags for fresh produce are being replaced a version made from corn starch that are home compostable and rot down without the need for any specialist treatment or high temperatures.

Waitrose & Partners will initially remove 5p bags from six shops from October 8, at Saxmundham, Gerrards Cross, Keynsham, Dorking, Newark and East Putney, to understand how to manage the changeover, ahead of their complete removal in March 2019.

Historically, the money raised from the sale of 5p carrier bags has been given to good causes. Waitrose says it will continue to support these good causes from the sales of ‘bags for life’.

The moves are part of a wider effort to cut down on plastic waste and pollution. It is currently removing plastic lined takeaway coffee cups from all its stores.

Waitrose is on target to achieve this, with cups now having been removed completely from more than 300 of its 348 shops.

It has also committed to making all its own-label packaging widely recyclable, reusable, or home compostable by 2025, which includes a pledge not to sell any own-label food in black plastic beyond 2019.

What is the plastic bag fee and is it changing?

Currently retailers with 250 or more full-time equivalent employees, have to charge for a plastic bag.

Theresa May recently vowed to 'go further' in tackling plastics use and confirmed charges for bags are set to double to 10p.

Disposable carrier bags issued by the seven biggest supermarket chains have declined by 86% since the charge was introduced, official figures show.

The fee came into effect in England on October 5 2015.

In 2014, the number of single-use carrier bags handed out by supermarkets in England was 7.6 billion, the equivalent of 140 bags per person.

Tor Harris, head of corporate social responsibility, health and agriculture for Waitrose, said: ‘The removal of these bags will change the way our customers, many of whom have been asking us to do this, shop with us in the future.

‘We know we still have a lot to do, but as with our commitment to removing takeaway disposable cups earlier this year, this represents another major step forward in reducing our use of plastics.’

Earlier this week supermarket chain Iceland announced it will no longer pack bananas in plastic bags in an effort to tackle waste and pollution.

The company is switching to paper-based packs that are 100 per cent recyclable in a decision that will stop 10 million plastic bags going into the bin every year.

Morrisons also offers paper bags for fresh produce.

Disposable carrier bags issued by the seven biggest supermarket chains have declined by 86% since the charge was introduced, official figures show.

The total number of single-use plastic bags sold by all 249 retailers who reported in 2017-18 was 1.75 billion – down from 7.6 billion in 2014.
