An 11-month-old baby has died after suffering breathing problems following a Qatar Airways flight this morning.

Arnav Varma had been travelling with his Indian parents on a flight from the city of Doha to Hyderabad in India.

The baby, who had a US passport, was taken to Apollo Medical Centre at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport soon after the flight landed but was declared dead on arrival.

It is not yet entirely clear when the child fell ill and where he was when he died. The airline claimed he died at Hyderabad's International Airport while a spokesman at the terminal denied this was the case.

Arnav had a US passport while his father held an Indian passport, it has been reported.

The family is believed to have flown to Doha as they made their way to visit relatives.

Qatar Airways said: 'We are aware of the very sad news that a young child passed away at Hyderabad International Airport this morning.

'Our heartfelt sympathy and thoughts are with the affected family,' it added.

A spokesperson for Qatar Airways told AFP that the baby was an 11-month-old boy who had been on the flight with his parents in the early hours of Wednesday.

The parents became aware that their child was having breathing problems after the plane had landed as they made their way to the immigration counter, the spokesperson said.

He was taken to the city's Apollo hospital.

A spokeswoman for Hyderabad airport denied that the baby had died at the airport.

'We're awaiting for investigations to conclude and for official reports from both Qatar Airways and Apollo hospitals on the baby's death,' Sangeetha C R said.

The hospital was not immediately available for comment when contacted by AFP.
