Triple J pranksters Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton were taken off air after prank calling their boss on Wednesday.

And in an effort to apologise on Thursday, the cheeky duo pranked radio executive Lachlan Macara again - which not surprisingly did not go down well.

'Are you kidding me? Are you doing this again?' Lachlan fumed live on-air.

Ben responded: 'Lachy, we're just calling you up to say we're really sorry for waking you up yesterday.'

Liam said: 'We know there were a lot of articles coming out. Obviously you were pretty upset in the meeting. We just wanted to apologise from the bottom of our hearts for yesterday.'

Unamused, Lachlan offered a blunt response before hanging up.

'I tell you what, lets have a quick chat about it at 9am,' he said firmly.

When Lachlan answered the phone he was greeted by the deafening chorus of Bring Me To Life by Evanescence.

Liam jumped in and greeted him with 'good morning' before telling him he was live on air with them.

Audibly just half awake, Lachlan said 'fantastic, yep, this is great.'

'Do we still have a job?' Liam asked, but Lachlan was not amused telling the duo 'when I get in, we should chat.' 

The boys tried to smooth things over by joking with him and complimenting his voice by describing it as a 'sexy morning voice'.

Liam joked he was being 'a bit of a slacker' for sounding asleep.

He continued the gag saying: 'You're not awake yet but the rest of the people listening now are cogs in the machine... Do you have any words for these people?'

But it was apparent the joke was not received well by Lachlan who said: 'I just want to apologise for this segment'.

'Come see me in my office at nine,' he said to the duo, before hanging up the phone.

Later, Ben and Liam stepped out of the studio to speak to Lachlan on the phone leaving producer Belle to take over.

Belle told listeners: 'We've had a little bit of a backlash there so we're just dealing with that. So this is another song that I'm just going to play while we're padding.'

When they returned, Ben downplayed any hint of an issue telling listeners: 'Everyone is cool here, not to worry.'

Liam chimed in: 'Some slackers can't handle the heat when it comes to Wednesday morning wake up call,' and assured listeners they would still do the weekly segment.

Daily Mail Australia has reached to Triple J for comment.
