RYAN Hinchcliffe admits he almost brought his team-mates to tears when he told them he was retiring.
And he will have to find two things to fill voids in his family life – tea and football.
Huddersfield’s veteran Australian forward and former captain is hanging up his boots at the end of the season to become a development coach with former NRL club Melbourne Storm.
Now as he prepares to move on, he revealed the emotion of his decision almost proved too much for one team-mate as he is such an integral part of the club.
Hinchcliffe, 33, said: “I was talking to Matty English the other day and when I told him I was leaving he nearly started crying, he said that nobody would be sadder to see me go than he would.
“And we’ll be taking home a six-year-old with a fairly strong Yorkshire accent who loves having cups of tea and a three-year-old son that loves football.
“I wouldn’t change a thing, I’ve learned a lot about myself and footy as well. Not for a second do I look back and regret the decision to come over, quite the opposite, I look back and think that it’s been a great three years for me and my family.
“I’ve enjoyed the English way of life, they don’t take things too seriously, they enjoy having a good time and have a good balance between work and play.”
While Hinchcliffe is at one end of his career, boss Simon Woolford, who will be named Ireland’s new national coach, believes they have something special in teenage twins Innes and Louis Senior.
He said ahead of tonight’s trip to Castleford: “The sky’s the limit for them. The Senior boys are 18-years-old, when they fill out they’re going to be scary. We can give them game time before the year’s out.”
Meanwhile, Salford and Hull are ready to rescue Anthony Gelling’s Super League hopes by taking him off Widnes.
The former Wigan centre, 27, has signed a deal to join the Vikings from New Zealand Warriors next season.
But if they, as expected, drop to the Championship, Gelling is likely to attract top flight attention from the Red Devils and the Black and Whites.
Salford insiders have told SunSport they were in for Gelling before he agreed to move to the Vikings.
Prop Charlie Gubb, 28, will also be marketed around Super League sides if Widnes drop, which will be confirmed if they lose to Halifax on Saturday.
