PEOPLE who live in towns and cities are more likely to develop dementia than those in the country, a study shows.

Researchers warned that high levels of pollution in built-up areas can affect the brain and cause harmful inflammation.

They analysed the medical records of 131,000 patients and compared them with pollution levels around their homes.

Some 2,181 people developed dementia in a seven-year follow-up period.

Those in areas with higher levels of nitrogen dioxide and fine particles of pollution pumped out by vehicles were 40 per cent more likely to be diagnosed.

The study by St George’s, University of London, focused on people living in 75 areas of the capital, but the findings are likely to be relevant nationwide.

Study leader Dr Iain Carey said: “This adds to growing evidence linking air pollution and neuro-degeneration.”
