They are believed to have been returning to Colombia after three days reporting on tourism in Paraguachón, in the state of Zulia, when they were detained by international security services.

The press union’s Twitter account reported that the press workers were detained at 10.20am yesterday morning and later moved to Maracaibo at 2.20pm.

On his Twitter Dan Rivers wrote: 'Thanks for all the messages of support - we have now been released from Venezuelan custody - exhausted but otherwise fine.'

Barnaby Green wrote: 'Safely back in Colombia. Many thanks to everyone that has helped today, especially colleagues at ITN - very much appreciated.

'Treated fairly and professionally at every stage.'

On her Twitter Laura Saravia wrote: 'Thanks everyone for the retweets and messages of support. We are now back in Colombia after a long and exhausting day. I would like to clarify that our equipment was not seized.

'Couldn't have asked for better company while held incomunicado @danriversitv @Barnaby_Green.'

Dan Rivers is an experienced international correspondent for CNN in London and Bangkok, whilst Saravia, has worked with BBC and NBC, amongst others.

Green is believed to have worked in video reporting with SkyNews in London and Washington.

All three are believed to have worked the British TV network, Independent Television News (ITN).

ITN produces daily news programmes for ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 in the UK.

Venezuela – currently mired in economic and political crisis -has been widely and consistently criticised internationally by press organisations for its negation of human rights and its efforts to censure free speech.

The detaining of these journalists follows the arrest of three individuals on Wednesday – contracted as security and drivers – which was also denounced by the National Venezuelan Press Union.

MailOnline approached ITN for comment.
