New photo Super League chief Robert Elstone believes it is now time for action after EGM vote

SUPER League will go through massive changes after rugby league’s great public argument ended – now chief executive Robert Elstone admits the pressure is on.

Claim, counter-claim and threat had been issued as a proposal to ditch the Super 8s and Qualifiers in favour of a one up, one down system caused outrage in many sections of rugby league.

In the end, out of 55 votes at the Rugby Football League’s council EGM yesterday (Fri) – which were split as Catalans Dragons, Toronto Wolfpack and Toulouse could not vote – 36.8 voted in favour, 17.2 against with one abstention.

The Championship will grow from 12 to 14 clubs for 2019, a decision made just two games before the end of the League One season. Now Elstone, brought in to grow the top flight, says the time for talking is over – now it is time for action.

He said: “The pressure is now on, rather than off but it’s a good pressure and a pressure I want. This now is the start of the job and it’s about me backing up what I’m saying. It’s down to action.

Rugby Football League chief executive Ralph Rimmer believes it was good that the game had to have an EGM

“That uncertainty hasn’t been good for the game and we need unity. The job starts now for the RFL and me because now we know where we’re going and where we are.

“It’s about delivering on these lofty visions we have. Super 8s and Qualifiers created so much uncertainty that really held a lot of clubs back and they were unable to plan properly.

“No-one can be not disappointed at the way things were played out, we’ve got to stop doing that. A lot of the meeting was spent talking about downsides and the game has to stop doing because it’s got a bright future.

“Doing any of that in public is not healthy. Actions speak louder than words, let’s stop airing dirty washing – actions speak louder than words.”

Super League chairmen backed the approval, with Wigan owner Ian Lenagan saying: “We’ve now reached the start line.”

And St Helens’ Eamonn McManus insisted: “We’ve been trying to move forward for months, now we’ve got the platform to strengthen the entire game, which we will.

“The gulf between Super League and the NRL and Premiership Rugby has become too great in the last 10 years. We have to remedy that.

Rugby Football League chief executive Ralph Rimmer has come under fire for allowing the row to be played out in public and the fact it went to an EGM.

But he claimed: “I’m delighted it got to the point where everybody could have their say – that’s far healthier than anything that can be seen to be secretive in any way.

“Everybody who’s sat there has had their say – some people have had a lot to say, and it’s far healthier that we air those differences and come to a conclusion.”

Several Championship and League One clubs voted against the proposal, primarily over fears of a lack of TV cash under the next TV deal.

And Featherstone owner Mark Campbell admitted: “What alarms me is that some people who might not be at these clubs in the next couple of months who potentially voting to shape Featherstone’s future, which is quite a worry.”
