PETER CROUCH has lifted the lid on the awkward time he thought he had a shot with Xabi Alonso’s wife upon signing for Liverpool.

The Stoke City striker has recalled the incident when he met Nagore Aranburu – unbeknown to the fact she was dating the ex-Real Madrid maestro.

Crouch, 37, met the Spaniard after joining from Southampton, where he was staying at the Hope Street Hotel.

While the ex-England international has also revealed he failed to impress Jamie Carragher over the incident.

Writing in his column in the Daily Mail, Crouch said: “On signing for Liverpool I stayed at the Hope Street Hotel.

“On reception was a girl so good-looking I couldn’t quite believe she was smiling at me all the time.

“I told the lads in training, ‘honestly, she’s beautiful, I think I’ve got a shout here.’ Jamie Carragher called a few other senior players over, ‘tell them again, Crouchie.’

“So I did, ‘amazing. Dark-haired. Spanish-looking. I’m in there.’ It turned out she was Xabi Alonso‘s partner.

“She was doing a bit of work to practise her language skills. He was nice about it. So was she. Carra less so.”

Mind you, Crouchy did OK in the end.

The England man married Abbey Clancy in July 2011, and the loved-up couple have three children together.
