TWO Brits have been taken to hospital after cheating death in a house collapse which has affected several properties on an expat residential estate in Spain.
Police had to cut through iron bars to reach one of the Brits and pull him through a downstairs window as his home threatened to come down on top of him.
Another, a local bar worker, was taken to Torrevieja University Hospital suffering shock.
The near-tragedy happened at an estate called Laguna 3 in Orihuela Costa south of Alicante.
Around 15 homes on the estate – divided into downstairs and upstairs apartments – have been evacuated and nearly eight are said to have been affected with large cracks which will prevent their residents returning to them in the short-term future.
The incident happened around 8am and followed a day in which residents reported hearing strange creaking noises on the estate.
Local mayor Emilio Bascunana confirmed from the scene: “A building has collapsed around 8am.
“They’re semi-detached duplex apartments. Fortunately there hasn’t been any loss of life or serious injuries.
“Two people have been taken to hospital, one suffering from a panic attack and another with superficial wounds including scratches.”
Sniffer dogs were mobilised to search the rubble and rule out the possibility anyone was trapped.
A Moroccan woman living opposite the buildings that were affected said several people whose homes had been affected were British.
The woman, who gave her name only Tisam, said: “Four of the properties I know of that are affected are home to three British people and a Swedish expat.
“A lot of people were sleeping when the collapse happened. There was a huge noise around 8am.
“One of the Brits in the house that was the worst affected had to be brought out of a downstairs window by firefighters.
“The other man, a local bar worker called David, was upstairs and was taken away with shock.”
Mr Bascunana said eight properties had been affected.
It wasn’t clear today what alternative accommodation would be provided for the people living in them.
Confirming the damage, he said: “The cause of the collapse will be investigated. Eight homes have been directly affected and other properties have been evacuated while the causes are evaluated.
Some residents have told officials work was going on at one of the houses that was affected, although the mayor said it was early at this stage to draw any conclusions and link it to the collapse.
He added: “The council will now try to rehouse all those people evacuated, in a hotel if necessary.”
Fire chief Alan Clemente added: “We responded to an alert this morning about the collapse of a property in the area of La Zenia in Orihuela Costa.

“It wasn’t clear at first if the two people inside were trapped or not. When we arrived police had already rescued one of the men by cutting through iron bars and pulling him out. He was suffering from respiratory problems.
“The second person, in the flat above, had taken refuge on the rooftop and had to be rescued using a telescopic ladder.
“He was okay but very nervous.”
