RUSSIAN hackers were behind the massive British Airways data theft that forced thousands of Brits to cancel their bank cards, experts claim.

Security researchers at Risk IQ say a group known as “Magecart” were responsible for stealing 380,000 customers’ details between August 21 and September 5.

Experts told the Times hackers “set up custom built, targeted infrastructure to blend in with the BA website specifically and avoid detection for as long as possible”

Risk IQ say the group had been active since 2015 or earlier and were also behind the Ticketmaster hack in June, when 40,000 customers had their details stolen.

Other experts have suggested that the attack on BA could have been prevented due to the publicity around the ticket website hack just weeks before.

Rob Shapland, a security consultant at Falanx Group, another research company, said the airline could have tracked code changes on its website.

He added: “The malicious code that steals the card details was injected into the site and would change the source code, meaning that it would be relatively simple to flag the difference as soon as it occurred.”

Magecart operate by injecting surreptitious code designed to steal the sensitive data that customers submit on online checkout pages.

One of these digital “skimmers” was placed on Ticketmaster websites through a third-party payment service provider.

In BA’s case, Risk IQ said the airline’s website was directly targeted and hackers had “substantial access” to the site that was likely gained long before the data theft.

The group has reportedly been linked to Russian-speaking hackers using web domains linked to Russia or other ex-Soviet countries.

Anthony Glees, of the University of Buckingham, said security firms have concluded the probability that a Russian organisation is behind the group is high.

He added: “The Russian connection matters not only because if the money flows there, there is little we can do about it, but because the nexus of Kremlin and serious organised crime shows there could be a political or strategic use of this kind of fraud.

“We know, or we believe we know, that Russia has every interest in fomenting chaos in the UK and other western states. A collapse in online commerce would be devastating especially when we have Brexit to contend with.”

BA refused to comment on speculation around the attack because it’s currently being investigated by the police and the Information Commissioner’s Office.

The airline is facing a fine of up to £500million under general data protection rules that came into force this year.
