New photo Notorious image of Newcastle fan punching horse has been painted – and is up for sale for £1100

ONE of the most sickening images of football thuggery is up for sale at £1,100 – after an artist painted it.

Newcastle fan Barry Rogerson punched a police horse called Bud in the head outside St James’ Park following Sunderland’s history 3-0 derby win in April 2013.

Geordie Sam Wood has now portrayed the image, based on a photo that shocked the country.

The Chronicle report Wood as saying: “It was an amazing image and one that stirred a lot of emotions.

“It’s an image people respond to and captures a certain moment in time.”

Rogerson, from Bedlington, Northumberland, was jailed for a year after pleading guilty at Newcastle Crown Court to violent disorder.

The court heard he was drunk and clapped in a horse’s face, before hitting Bud.

Rogerson was also banned from attending all football matches in the UK until 2019.

Sunderland‘s vital victory, their first at Newcastle for 13 years, sparked euphoric scenes from Paolo Di Canio in his second match in charge.

Stephane Sessegnon had squeezed home a first-half opener before Adam Johnson and David Vaughan struck late on.

Italian Di Canio stepped in when Martin O’Neill was controversially axed.

And the former Swindon chief rewarded what seemed a brave decision as he kept Sunderland up in a tough season for both the two Tyne-Wear teams.

The Black Cats finished fourth-bottom, one place below Alan Pardew’s Newcastle.
