MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped their interest in RB Leipzig technical director Paul Mitchell, according to reports.

United are keen to add a technical director to the Old Trafford football department to provide a long-term strategy in the transfer market and work in tandem with the manager.

Old Trafford chiefs have spent heavily since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but under David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and now Jose Mourinho, there has been a lack of joined-up thinking regarding player recruitment.

And a pathway back to the Premier League could be made easier as tensions grow between Mitchell and sporting director Ralf Rangnick, report Bild.

Following the departure of first-team boss Ralph Hasenhuttl in May, Rangnick has taken over in the dugout.

Rangnick has not been impressed with the summer recruitment as Mitchell failed to land Ademola Lookman after his impressive loan stint last season.

Leipzig also missed out Sebastian Rudy who left Bayern Munich to join Schalke.

Mitchell, 37, moved to the Bundesliga side in February after serving out a 16-month notice period following his exit from Tottenham.

Bild claims a move to Old Trafford would be the ideal job for Manchester-born Mitchell who is regarded as one of the best in the business after heading up recruitment at Southampton and Spurs.

If Mitchell decided to quit the Red Bull Arena, he would have to endure another notice period before any potential switch to the Premier League side.

United want to implement a new structure following a summer of complaints from Mourinho after his transfer targets were blocked by the club top brass as they were deemed overpriced short-term fixes and not a real improvement on the current squad.
