PHIL FODEN has made quite an impression and is likely to be rewarded with a long-term deal at Manchester City as a result.
The 18-year-old shone for Pep Guardiola’s side last night against Oxford United and scored his first senior goal for his boyhood club.
Foden found the back of the net with an excellent left-footed effort in injury time, as City progressed to the next round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 win.
The defending champions are opening up channels to begin negotiations after the young England star was involved in City‘s first two goals and scoring the third.
His current contract expires in 2020 and thus far there has been no change in the terms.
But with Pep Guardiola and the City hierarchy keen to keep their young star, talks are reported to be taking place imminently.
Guardiola is known to nurture his young players and Foden last night acknowledged that.
After the game, he said: “Pep knows what he’s doing and I’ll play at the right time.
“He’s good at bringing youth players through, he’s done it in his career before so just be patient, I’m still young and I’m still learning.
“Training with the likes of David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne and seeing what they do every day has brought me on as a player and working with Pep as well has been a really big part of my game.”
Guardiola has heaped praise on the youngster for some time now and has even told Gareth Southgate that the youngster was ready for his senior squad.
Foden was voted best player at the U17 World Cup last summer and is now the bookies’ favourite to be the next player to receive a call up from Southgate.
The City wonder-kid excited Guardiola when he was the star of the show in City’s victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield, clocking up 54 touches, creating three chances and providing one assist.
And last night he received similar praise from the City boss, Guardiola said: “He is a special guy, in terms of the quality with or without the ball and I am pretty sure he is going to mark the next decade with our club. My dream is for him to stay 10 years.”
The lifelong Manchester City fan tweeted his excitement at getting his name on the scoresheet against Oxford.
And he evidently loved the comparisons that were being drawn between himself and Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta.
But it’s not the first time that the young English star has been likened to a Barcelona legend.
Foden was hailed ‘mini Messi’ after his performance in the Community Shield this summer.
