New photo Hurricane Florence: Resilient flag shredded off North Carolina coast

Throughout all the driving wind and rain that has pounded the North Carolina coast over the last few days, there is one image that will live long in the memory.

The stars and stripes of Old Glory flying in the wind and being ripped to shreds by hurricane force winds.

The flag is flying at an unusual location at a bed-and-breakfast some 34 miles off the coast in old Coast Guard tower called Frying Pan Tower.

The American flag took a beating and began to rip during Florence and it began to tear apart

The tower is a Coast Guard Light Station that has been turned into a unique bed & breakfast.

But the owner, Richard Neal, ended up dealing with some angry calls from veterans as the storm approached.

Although Neal decided not to stay on the Frying Pan and instead head for dry land, people were still able to view footage from a webcam showing the flag being whipped about in the wind.

At one point, the live footage showed the tower's flag being shredded by the storm's devastating rain and wind.

'They told me, 'this is disrespectful,' and that I need to get out there and replace the flag right then,' Neal told McClatchy. 'In the hurricane.'

The owner received several angry calls from online viewers who were upset that the flag was left out during the storm

A little later in the storm, he was able to remotely reposition the live cam so the flag was no longer in shot.

But then even more people contacted him to ask how the flag was doing and what happened to it.

'It was then that I realized that you can't make everyone happy, so I moved the feed back to showing the flag again. Because even if it was against flag protocol, that flag represents who we are as America. We get beat up, battered during hard times, but we stay up, stay at it through the storm.' Neal said.

Neal says the flag 'represents who we are as America.' 'We get beat up, battered during hard times, but we stay up, stay at it through the storm.'
