GEORGE GROVES will be a vengeful fighting machine when he defends his WBA super-middleweight title against Callum Smith on Friday night.
The British pair clash in Saudi Arabia in the final of the World Boxing Super Series with The Saint armed with a new reinforced metal shoulder and fuelled on critics writing him off.
The 30-year-old Hammersmith star dislocated the joint in the semi-final win over Chris Eubank Jr in February and was pushed to the verge of quitting over the agonising surgery and rehab.
But coach Shane McGuigan told SunSport his iron man is better than ever as he targets the Muhammad Ali trophy in Jeddah.
McGuigan said: “He has had an operation so the chances of his shoulder popping out again are slim to nothing.
“It is safer than the other shoulder because he has bolts to lock it in place now.
“The amount of work he has done to get it back is phenomenal, we have had to work so hard but over time it slowly came back.
“We have had two of the best guys in the world at repairing shoulder injuries working on George and it is now at the backs of our minds.
“George now wants to showcase his ability. So many people wrote him off before and that is what he is using as fuel.”
If Groves beats a third domestic rival to the trophy – after vanquishing Swindon’s Jamie Cox and Eubank Jr in the early rounds – he could land around £9million in total for winning the tournament,
But he was already wealthy man after selling out 90,000 seater Wembley for his 2014 rematch loss to Carl Froch and finally landing a world title at the fourth time of asking in 2017.
And McGuigan, who never knew how close Groves came to retiring after the agonising injury, insists money is not his charge’s motivation.
He said: “Quitting was never brought to my attention by George.
“I know it can be hard to motivate yourself when you have a lot of money in the bank and a world title.
“But he has worked so hard to get in that position that he is not going to let a dislocated shoulder take that away.
“George is a very driven man and sometimes you don’t see it with him.
“I have worked with a lot of fighters who are hungry for success but it has dwindled but George now wants to showcase his ability.

“Every fight from now on in is a bonus and he is massive money now, every fight can take him another eight-ten years in his life, with the right investments.”
Groves and 28-year-old challenger Smith could not hide their disappointment at the all-British battle being held almost 3,000 miles from London.
But the desert dust-up should make for an incredible spectacle, even if some of boxing’s most famous crowd pleasers are missing in the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.
McGuigan said: “It’s the first time they have had a boxing event there and I am sure it will be very different. The culture is very different, it’s sober and very respectful.
“There will probably be a lot of clapping but none of the jeers or wolf whistles we are used to over here and I doubt there will be ring girls.
“A different atmosphere but a new and exciting experience and when the first bell goes it will all be the same.”
