BABIES can spot a bully before they can talk or walk, according to new research.
But what else might your baby be thinking? Psychologist Linda Papadopoulos tells CLAIRE DUNWELL what tots are tuned into and at what age.
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL
Recognising reflections is a big part of a baby’s development[/caption]
Studies suggest infants recognise their own reflection between 24 and 36 months.
In the “mirror test”, six to 12-month-olds react as if they are looking at another baby, smiling and making noises.
At 13 to 24 months, they are more wary of the baby in the mirror.
Toddler-aged children appear to recognise the reflection as themselves and will touch a spot on their own nose as opposed to reaching out to touch one in the mirror.
THEY JUST GET IT
By six or seven months some babies will start to recognise their name[/caption]
Babies begin to babble at six months and at six to seven months can respond to their name.
By nine months, they can understand basic words such as “hello” or “no”.
Between a year and 18 months, they respond to more words and can understand simple instructions, such as “Come here”.
By two years, they can begin to string simple words together and start to understand abstract terms like “yours” and “mine”.
EXPRESS YOURSELF
Very young babies can copy facial expressions[/caption]
Even very young babies react to and modify their behaviour based on the facial expressions of their carers.
They tend to feel more secure when they can see facial expressions and can become upset when there is a lack of expression from their carers.
Your baby will also pick up on your tone of voice, how you hold them and your body language.
DOWN MEMORY LANE
Some studies suggest that newborns can recognise their mum’s voice from birth[/caption]
From around two months, babies can recognise familiar voices and faces.
Mum and Dad are their favourites, naturally.
Some studies suggest newborns can recognise their mum’s voice at birth.
By nine months, babies will remember things like where their favourite toy is.
BE MY FRIEND
By nine-months-old babies can recognise words such as ‘yes’ and ‘no’[/caption]
Babies are socialised over time.
In the first few months it is all about watching, smiling and gurgling.
Around four to five months, they become more open to people.
MOST READ IN FABULOUS
As they approach their first birthday, they may become more interested in other babies.
It is generally 24 to 36 months when they become interested in interacting with friends.
They learn to share, read emotions and show affection, so this is when we see the first tentative steps of friendship.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
