Johnny Field had the first multi-homer game of his career, Jorge Polanco supplied a three-run triple and the Minnesota Twins handed Paul Molitor his 300th managerial win by pounding the Detroit Tigers 11-4 on Wednesday in Minneapolis.
Field homered in his first two at-bats and drove in three runs. Tyler Austin hit a two-run homer, and Chris Gimenez also knocked in two runs. Robbie Grossman added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Christin Stewart led Detroit's offense with a run scored and two RBIs.
Detroit starter Matthew Boyd (9-13) gave up six runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. Minnesota starter Jake Odorizzi allowed four runs on six hits and five walks in three-plus innings. Tyler Duffey (2-2) tossed two innings of scoreless relief to get credit for the victory.
The Tigers (64-94) grabbed the lead in the first inning on a Jeimer Candelario walk and Stewart's triple to center field. Stewart was thrown out at the plate on the play.
Minnesota (73-84) struck back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Polanco drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on Grossman's RBI single. Austin then followed with his two-run shot to left.
Field's leadoff homer in the second made it 4-1.
The Twins' lead was cut to one in the third. Stewart and Nicholas Castellanos drew back-to-back walks with one out. Niko Goodrum's single knocked in Stewart, and James McCann's opposite-field hit brought home Castellanos.
The Tigers loaded the bases against Odorizzi in the fourth with no one out. Stewart then hit a sacrifice fly off Duffey to tie it at 4-all. Duffey struck out the next two batters to keep it that way.
Field's second homer of the night put the Twins back up by two runs in the bottom of the inning. Jake Cave led off with a single, and Field then drove the ball just over the left field wall.
The Twins took command with a five-run fifth for an 11-4 lead. Gimenez had a two-run single off Sandy Baez, and Polanco drilled his bases-clearing triple off Zac Reininger.
