An extinct bird nearly 10ft tall has been named the largest that ever lived.

The flightless Vorombe titan — an ostrich-like giant — once roamed the East African island of Madagascar.

Its name means Big Bird in Malagasy and Greek — but it bore little resemblance to the 8ft 2ins yellow character from children’s TV show Sesame Street. A type of elephant bird, it weighed just under a ton and had powerful legs and fearsome claws.

Experts have spent decades poring over conflicting evidence to try to identify the largest bird.

A new study of Madagascar’s elephant birds has ended the debate and given the title to V. titan, according to researchers from the Zoological Society of London.

Elephant birds vanished around 1,000 years ago. One theory is that they were hunted to extinction by human beings.
