PLAY your part in British Food Fortnight – an annual celebration of our nation’s food and drink.


When you are doing the shopping, show your support to UK producers by buying British. Not only will you know where your food comes from, you will also get the chance to enjoy different tastes from all corners of the country.


Homegrown British produce is widely available in supermarkets

Morrisons is even hosting its own in-store Great British Food Festival. To get you started, here are some great British buys on the shelves this week.


Fruit


MAKE the most of the apple harvest with these juicy deals



  • A British apple and pear box, £2 from Morrisons, contains four royal gala apples and three conference pears.

  • Save a third on four Waitrose Best of British apples, was £3, now £2.

Fresh meat and fish

MAKE a meal of eating British – and keep your eyes peeled for the Red Tractor mark for food that has been responsibly produced.



  • Get a farm-assured large whole British chicken from Morrisons, down from £4.38 to £3.50.

  • Book in for a British date night with Iceland luxury 21-day matured British fillet steak, £170g, £4.50.

  • Which? magazine judges crowned Co-op’s Irresistible Hereford beef burgers, £3.20, as the best beef patties on supermarket shelves.

  • Save a third on Waitrose unsmoked British free-range gammon joint, was £10.84, now £7.23. Just add mashed potato and parsley sauce.

  • Co-op commits to 100 per cent British meat in own-brand ready meals, so you can enjoy an exotic dish, such as Co-op low-fat Jamaican chicken curry with bean rice 350g, £2.50, and know it is made with British meat

  • A pack of Ocado’s two skinless British chicken breast fillets is £2.92 or buy two packs this week for £5.

  • Iceland What the Fish, an 800g pack of UK-caught grey gurnard, pouting, megrim and whiting caught unintentionally while fishing for more popular species, is available now in selected Iceland stores for £8.

DRINK up these deals on British thirst-quenchers.



  • Bottle Green cordials, made in the Cotswolds, are down from £3.25 to £2.50 at Sainsbury’s, including pomegranate and elderflower.

  • Save 77p on Welsh-made Heartsease Farm sparkling British blackcurrant crush from Ocado, was £2.29 now £1.52.

  • Save 70p on Suffolk-made Copella cloudy apple juice at Sainsbury’s, now £2.

Ales and ciders

DO a tour of Britain’s brewers from the comfort of your armchair with these lip-smacking offers.



  • Enjoy selected beers for just £1.25 a bottle at Morrisons including Abbot Ale, Marston’s Old Empire, Marston’s Pedigree, Blonde Witch and Wychwood Hobgoblin.

  • Co-op Irresistible Tillington Hills dry cider, 500ml bottle, £1.99 or three for £5.

  • Get two packs for £8 at Waitrose on Morland Old Speckled Hen ale (four cans), or £5 per pack.

  • Get a Classic Ales mixed pack of six 500ml bottles from Sainsbury’s and save £1.50, now £8.

  • For a Scottish brew, Brewdog Punk IPA, 4 x 330ml, is £6 at Tesco or buy two for £9, saving £3.

Cold meats and deli


FOR a tasty lunch, look no further than these typically British treats.



  • Save £3 per kilo on ham on the bone from Morrisons deli counter, was £1.70 per 100g, now £1.40.

  • Bite into a British classic with two mini Melton Mowbray pork pies from the Co-op, £1.10.

  • Make space on your table for four Tesco pork and apple sausage rolls, £2 or two packs for £3.50

  • Save 50p on Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference breaded Yorkshire ham, now £2.

Cheese

IT sounds crackers but Britain produces more varieties of cheese than France – and here are some great deals.



  • Save £1.50 per kilo on mature blue Stilton from Morrisons deli counter, now £8 per kilo.


  • The Co-op’s Irresistible Somerset vintage Cheddar, £2.30, is perfect for cheese on toast.

  • For a twist on tradition, save 30p on Sainsbury’s double Gloucester cheese and chive, now only £1.50.


  • Get two for £4 on Waitrose Yorkshire mild Wensleydale with mango and ginger or £2.75 each.


  • Save £2 per kilo on Belton Farm Red Fox Vintage red Leicester from Morrisons deli counter, now £8 per kilo.

Broccoli and Stilton soup


(Serves six)


This soup is perfect for warming up on a cold Autumn evening

YOU NEED:



  • 25g butter

  • Small onion, diced

  • 450g broccoli

  • 500ml vegetable stock

  • 100g Stilton

  • 150ml single cream


METHOD:



  • Melt the butter in a large saucepan, add the onion and cook gently for five minutes.

  • Finely chop the broccoli florets and stems, keeping a few florets unchopped, to decorate.

  • Add all the broccoli to the onion, plus the stock, and bring to the boil for five minutes.

  • Remove the broccoli florets for garnish, then blend the rest with the stock until very finely chopped.

  • Crumble the Stilton, making sure you keep a few crumbs to garnish the soup.

  • Add the Stilton to the soup and whizz briefly. Stir in the cream and heat gently, but do not boil.

  • Before serving, season to taste. Then pour into bowls and garnish each bowl with broccoli florets and a few crumbs of Stilton.


Blackberry bakewell cake


(Serves eight)


Serve with a cheeky spoon of vanilla ice cream if you’re feeling fancy

YOU NEED:



  • 150g unsalted butter

  • 150g caster sugar

  • 3 eggs, beaten

  • 1 tsp almond extract

  • 100g ground almonds

  • 80g self-raising flour

  • 200g blackberries

  • 30g flaked almonds

  • 2 tbsp demerara sugar

METHOD:



  • Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease and line a 20cm round loose-based cake tin with baking parchment.

  • In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add the eggs, almond extract, ground almonds and flour and mix well.

  • Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared tin. Scatter blackberries over the top then sprinkle over the flaked almonds and demerara sugar.

  • Bake in the oven for an hour or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
