BRITAIN would not be able to protect our fishing waters in a No Deal Brexit because of a lack of resources, a Whitehall watchdog warns today.
A row with Philip Hammond’s Treasury has seen Environment boss Michael Gove refused cash for new ships, aircraft and personnel to patrol UK waters.
It was one of a series of alarm bells rung by the National Audit Office who say Defra is not ready to leave the EU.
Defra is one of the Government departments most affected by Brexit, with 55 of the 319 EU-related “work streams” covering the chemical and agri-food industries, agriculture, fisheries and the environment.
Britain’s multi-billion-pound food export industry also faces being badly hit by a no-deal Brexit because the Government has failed to hire enough vets.
Valuable products and livestock face being blocked or held up at UK ports and airports because there are not enough animal doctors to sign off new export health certificates covering EU countries, the NAO said.
They warned: “Without enough vets, consignments of food could be delayed at the border or prevented from leaving the UK.
“Defra intended to start engaging with the veterinary industry in April 2018, but has not been permitted to do so and now plans to launch an emergency recruitment campaign in October to at least meet minimum levels of vets required.
The damning report came as Ministers prepared to outline how farming subsidies will be phased out after Brexit.
