THIS is the harrowing moment an “acid attack” victim is sprayed with what he feared was a corrosive liquid in a terrifying daylight robbery on Sunday.
Footage shows Mike Glover-Johnson, 46, being covered in an unknown substance before running into a takeaway in Bloxwich, West Mids, clutching his face.
He said he was in “agony” and that his face was “burning” after the liquid was hurled into his face while he was sat in his car.
But after viewing CCTV, cops have today revealed the substance was not corrosive and added that Mike has not sustained “longstanding injuries”.
Officers now believe that the liquid was thrown as a “distraction tactic” before a thief stole a laptop from Mike’s vehicle.
A West Midlands spokesman said: “Police investigating reports that an acidic substance was thrown at a man in Bloxwich High Street last night have confirmed the liquid was not corrosive.
“The victim was sat in his car just before 7pm when he was approached by a man who threw liquid in his face.
“He was taken to hospital but has since been discharged having suffered no long-standing injuries.
“Detectives have now reviewed CCTV footage and suspect the liquid was thrown as a tactic designed to distract the man while his lap-top was swiped from the passenger seat.”
Sergeant Matt Slattery, from Force CID, said: “Although tests are still being carried out on the substance we are now confident it was non-corrosive.
“We believe it was used as a distraction for the robbery.
“We fully appreciate how distressing this was for the victim and we are determined to find whoever was responsible for this robbery.”
Describing the terrifying incident, Mike claimed both he and his husband Lee, 41, were “kicked out” of the takeaway outlet and even told they had to buy water to pour on himself.
He said: “We were asked to leave the takeaway and they said if you want more water we’re going to have to charge you for it.
“I needed water on my face. I was in agony. Luckily, people brought buckets of water — I was absolutely drenched.
“It should have been a priority for the staff, when someone was in that sort of agony they should have helped.”
However, Sayed Hashmi, the manager of Chunky Grill, hit back at his claims and said he wasn’t turned away from the restaurant and later apologised to Mike for the “misunderstanding”.
He said: “We did give them water and we didn’t turn them away from the restaurant.
“We have also just finished handing over our CCTV to the police which shows the attack taking place.
Mike told The Sun Online how his masked attackers forced open his car door before throwing the liquid and running off.
He said: “I was sitting in the car, on my phone when this guy opened the door and said: ‘Don’t move’.
“Then I felt this burning on my face. They just ran off and I think they got in a car.
“When it started to happen I thought it was some sort of joke at first. Then I thought it might be a car-jacking or robbery but they just ran off.

Mike has now revealed that he has since “received an apology” from the owner of the Chunky Grill restaurant.
“He was not at the shop at the time and he has assured me that the staff members that acted inappropriately will be dealt with. Apology appreciated.”
