THE woman who inspired Buddy Holly’s hit song Peggy Sue has died at the age of 78.
Peggy Sue Gerron Rackham died at University Medical Center in Texas on Monday, according to hospital spokesman Eric Finley.
The family gave the hospital permission to confirm the death, but asked that no additional information be released, Finley said Tuesday.
Peggy was born in Olton, Texas, but moved to Lubbock where she met Holly and his band mate in The Crickets, Jerry Allison, who she went on to date.
It was widely reported that the song was titled Cindy Lou, after Holly’s niece, but Allison asked him to change it to Peggy Sue to win her back after a break up.
Peggy’s long denied this and the pair married in 1958 – inspiring the follow up single Peggy Sue Got Married.
Holly tragically died a year later in a plane crash in Iowa which also killed Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson.
Peggy and Jerry divorced in 1964 and she moved to California to attend Pasadena Junior College.
According to her website, she remarried and set up a plumbing company with her husband – and claims she became the first licensed woman plumber in California.
In 2008, Peggy released her autobiography “Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?: A Memoir by Buddy Holly’s Peggy Sue” to mark the 50th anniversary of the song.
Peggy said material for the memoir came from about 150 diary entries she made during the time she knew Holly.
She said: “I wanted to give him (Holly) his voice. It’s my book, my memoirs.
“We were very, very good friends. He was probably one of the best friends I ever had.”
Holly wrote several other popular songs, including “That’ll Be The Day” and “Maybe Baby.” He also penned the song-sequel “Peggy Sue Got Married.”
