WE always said they would crack and yesterday there were signs of the EU doing just that.
Jean-Claude Juncker is now warning a No-Deal Brexit would be bad for the EU. Preening Irish PM Leo Varadkar, previously keen to take any opportunity to weaponise the issue of the Northern Irish border, is also finally falling into line.
Juncker, clearly under pressure from the 27 EU leaders, is growing anxious for a deal. For all his pontificating, he knows how disastrous a No-Deal would be for Europe.
This is the moment for Theresa May, buoyed by her decent Tory party conference performance, to stick to her red lines. The PM cannot accept any deal that splits up the UK. A future trading deal needs to be thrashed out, too.
And it is vital she does not hand over a penny of the £39billion divorce bill until an agreement is reached. Brexiteers will say her Chequers offer is already too generous.
She must not give an inch more.
Shame of Tommies tax
FOUR years ago the country was united in admiration by the incredible 888,246 ceramic poppies surrounding the Tower of London as tribute to our Great War dead.
When it was revealed in 2014 that the Treasury was pocketing the VAT on each poppy, George Osborne agreed to waive it so that military charities benefited.
Now tin-eared Chancellor Philip Hammond is refusing to listen to campaigners over another tax raid on the Armistice Campaign’s sales of Tommy “silhouettes”.
It is shameful that the Government will rake in more through this grab than any of the charities who are trying to help desperate, sick and elderly veterans. Sun on Sunday readers buying a Tommy to honour the sacrifices made by grandads or great-grandads will be appalled.
Hammond must back down in the Budget.
Corbyn a danger to UK
IN these uncertain times, it bears repeating: Jeremy Corbyn is a danger to Britain.
In the week Russia was caught trying to hack into the Dutch facility holding the Salisbury Novichok samples, ex-MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove warns the Labour leader’s “friends” make him unfit for office.
MOST READ IN OPINION
Make no mistake. Those friends include Vladimir Putin.
Remember, Corbyn suggested we send Novichok samples to Russia for testing. He has repeatedly failed to condemn Putin.
He is not fit to be Prime Minister.
