INSTAGRAM stopped working on Wednesday morning in a surprise global outage – but it’s now back online.
The popular image-sharing app received thousands of complaints from users who couldn’t get the News Feed to refresh or the desktop website to load.
The website-outage tracker Down Detector’s live chart tracked a large spike of user reports about Instagram at 8am UK time.
Roughly half of the reports are related to the News Feed not working properly, while an additional 30% are about log-in issues.
And 18% of users complained that the website wasn’t loading correctly.
The Sun was able to confirm the issue – attempting to reload your News Feed brings up a “Couldn’t refresh feed” error.
It meant it was impossible to see new photos and videos being uploaded to the site, with many users waking up this morning only seeing old posts from yesterday.
Users took to Twitter to complain about the gaffe.
One wrote: “Who else comes straight to Twitter to see if Instagram is down?”
Another said: “Literally just came onto Twitter to see if Instagram was down this is our culture now.”
In a statement, an Instagram spokesperson told The Sun: “We’re aware that some users are having trouble accessing Instagram. We’re working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
The website and app appear to have resumed normal function at around 9.15am UK time.

It’s rare for Instagram to go down, although we have seen a few major outages this year.
There were two big outages in June, and a third in July, although one of those only affected Android users.
There’s no official word on what caused Wednesday’s issue, but it appears to be related to Instagram’s servers – huge computers that hold the information you’re trying to access.
When you attempted to load up the desktop website, you got the error code ‘5xx’ – that’s the codename for server issues.
The good news is that other Facebook-owned services like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Facebook proper are all working correctly.
