New photo Burnley 1-1 Huddersfield: Christopher Schindler earns point for visitors

Christopher Schindler scored a deserved equaliser for winless Huddersfield as they clambered off the bottom of the table with a spirited comeback to draw at Turf Moor.

Schindler grabbed his first Premier League goal – and only the fourth Terriers have scored this season – to cancel out Sam Vokes’ opener for the home side.

And it was the least David Wagner’s side deserved as they dominated with 68% possession and had more shots on goal and corners.

The German had an eventful afternoon all round. After his 66th minute goal he was caught by Burnley striker Sam Vokes and then had the ball hit him in the face, requiring four minutes of treatment for a cut head.

These teams played out two goalless draws last season so the entertainment on offer at Turf Moor was a pleasant surprise.

Vokes had an early effort saved by Jonas Lossl while at the other end Huddersfield’s Laurent Depoitre was denied by a magnificent block by James Tarkowski though he should have scored from eight yards from Aaron Mooy’s pass.

Burnley, who had won their previous two games, then made a breakthrough after 20 minute when Ben Mee’s flick from a free-kick reached Johann Gudmundsson on the right.

The Icelander stole half a yard and delivered a perfect swinging cross that Vokes met with a powerful header into the corner after outjumping Schindler.

It was the first time the Welshman had scored in consecutive matches for 14 months, following his winner at Cardiff last weekend.

Huddersfield had scored only three goals in their previous seven league games – the lowest in the division.

Jonathan Hogg’s half-volley scored highly for technical merit but still flew over the bar.

Depoitre looked like a man who has gone 10 matches without a goal when he couldn’t get his feet sorted out to capitalise on an error by Charlie Taylor, awkwardly flicking the ball wide.

The Belgian’s afternoon then got worse as he was correctly booked by judge Kavanagh, referee Christopher Kavanagh, for diving as he chased Tarkowski for a rebound after Hart had parried from Mooy.

Depoitre and Rajiv van La Parra were immediately hooked by Wagner while Burnley boss Sean Dyche responded by sending on his £15million centre-forward Wood for Ashley Barnes.

The changes suited Huddersfield who quickly levelled. Chris Lowe produced an excellent cross from the left and Schindler cleverly ghosted in behind Mounie and Mee and guided a back-header past Hart.

Being only Huddersfield’s fourth goal, their fans celebrated it like a Wembley winner.

Poor Schindler’s next contribution was more painful – appearing to be caught by an elbow from Vokes and having a shot hit his face in the same attack. It took four minutes of patching up a cut head before he was passed fit to continue.

They continued to press during eight minutes of injury time. Even though they couldn’t find a winner, their point lifted them above Cardiff at the foot of the table.
