New photo Revolutionary new weight loss procedure has seen people lose five stone in six months – without going under the knife

A REVOLUTIONARY new surgery could see people shed their excess body fat in mere months, all without going under the knife.

The new one-hour procedure is called the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), and is and being offered as part of an NHS trial.

ESG shrinks the stomach by stitching part of it, effectively sectioning it off.

It sees stomach size reduced by around two thirds, and as there are no incisions it means no scars and patients can often return to work within a few days.

It helps people lose weight as the stomach is now smaller, they feel fuller quicker and their appetite is reduced.

But if they overeat, it can cause the stitches to burst and stomach returns to normal size.

As the procedure partly relies on patients’ willpower not to overfeed themselves, it’s thought it could be more beneficial in the long run.

Initial results have shown that the majority of people keep off around 60 per cent of their excess weight, putting its success rate on par with the most invasive forms of surgery, a formal sleeve gastrectomy.

This is where the stomach is cut and stitched to make it into a tube, reducing the size of the stomach.

But it’s irreversible, and often people who have had the surgery find their stomach stops producing digestive chemicals needed to absorb Vitamin B12, leading to anaemia.

Jamie Kelly, one of the surgeons offering the operation, says: “We see up to 70 per cent weight loss in eight out of ten patients, within the first six to nine months.

“At the two-year mark we find the majority keep it off.

“A gastric band will give between 50 and 60 per cent excess weight loss at two years.

“The balloon results in about 20 to 30 per cent weight loss but they are typically removed within a year, and more than 90 per cent of patients regain the weight.

“In the case of ESG, if a patient repeatedly overeats, the stitches will break and the stomach returns to a normal size.

“But the operation helps them control their urge to overeat, so we see a great weight-loss results.”

Patients are put under general anaesthetic, and a tube and camera are inserted via the mouth and mechanical devices stitch the stomach with non-absorbable nylon-based material which can withstand the stomach acid.

Mr Kelly added: “The stitching pattern looks a bit like the lacing on a pair of hiking boots.

“When it’s pulled tight, that area of the stomach compresses and the overall volume is reduced.

“Patients are often back at work within three or four days.”

Currently the operation is being offered to select patients as part of a trial but can be done privately at a cost of £10,000.

One of the people first selected to have ESG is 31-year-old car salesman Ben Jones, from Stockport.

He had a BMI of 43, and the married father-of-one tipped the scales at 23st.

After undergoing ESG last November, he now weights 18st.

He said: “I had to stick to a liquid diet for 30 days, which was the hardest part, and then move on to soft foods, like mashed bananas.

“Now I can eat what I like but my appetite is massively reduced.

“Surgery has given me a new lease of life.

“I’m more than happy, and I have a few fat friends who want the operation now.”
