A LATTE levy could be the final nail in the coffin for the battered High Street, according to new research.
A major survey found one in three coffee drinkers would stop visiting the high street if Philip Hammond slaps a 25p tax on plastic coffee cups in his autumn Budget.

Three in four Brits visit other local shops when they pop out for a coffee.
On average, they visit two shops and spend £15 according to a poll of 2,000 Brits by Censuswide for the Paper Cup Alliance.
Campaigners said the research exposed how important coffee shops are to the high street – and warned the Chancellor of the unintended consequences and not to target paper cups with a new tax.
It comes after The Sun revealed last week that Treasury officials are preparing to extend the planned “latte levy” on coffee cups to include burger chain soft drinks and shakes.

British Coffee Association boss Chris Stemman said: “These figures are no surprise. Independent cafes and coffee chains are playing an important part in regenerating local high streets and shopping centres, providing focal points for communities.
“In tough and uncertain times a cup of coffee is an affordable treat.
A cup tax is a real threat to local economies and doesn’t solve this as a long term sustainability issue that needs to be dealt with through innovation, recyclable packaging, and recycling processes.”
