New photo Mum-of-three, 23, ‘feared ending up homeless’ after ‘being told housing benefits would stop’

A MUM-of-three feared she would be homeless and living on the streets after allegedly being told her benefits would stop when she dropped out of uni.

Lilyth Coglan is classed as a “suspended student” and entitled to benefits, but claims Hull City Council sent her letters saying they believe she is still in education so can’t claim benefits.

The 23-year-old had to stop her degree at the University of Hull after pregnancy complications and a traumatic birth.

She relies on the benefits to pay her rent and worries her family could be turfed out if she doesn’t get the payments.

The young mum said she has proved her educational status to the council but has got multiple letters warning the payments will be stopped.

But Miss Coglan told the Hull Daily Mail: “I have given the council evidence on many occasions from my university of my situation and my entitlement to housing benefit, but they keep contacting me to say they are stopping our money.

“I’ve recently had an operation to have my gall bladder removed and only gave birth three months ago, so I’m meant to be at home recovering and bringing up my baby and children, but I’m having to live with the stress of potentially becoming homeless.

“I’m being made to feel like I’m doing something wrong by claiming the housing benefit even though I’m fully entitled to it and desperately need it. I will be able to give back when I go back to university and pass my course, but I’m made to feel awful.”

Hull City Council has looked into her claims and said the payments are in place as normal – but Miss Coglan worries the confusion will happen again.

The mum-of-three lives with her partner, who suffers from anxiety and depression and is struggling to find work.

She has become frustrated with going back and forth to the council to prove she has suspended her studies.

Miss Coglan added she’s worried she might be thrown out of their rented property as their landlord wants possession of his property back.

She fears if a payment is missed due to another muddle, he will have an excuse to evict them.

A spokesman from the authority said: “The council made a check on the status of the resident regarding ongoing benefit entitlement. The query regarding benefit has been answered and so payment is in place as normal.

“Residents are urged to contact the council directly on 300300 to resolve any concerns they may have.”
