A TOP Labour politician’s son was jailed yesterday for  rape.

Jonathan Drakeford, 31, whose dad Mark is the Welsh government’s finance minister, hit his victim with a paddle during the attack.

The woman, 22, was so traumatised she was scared to leave her house in case he pounced again.

The rapist, whose dad is favourite to take over as Welsh First Minister, was convicted of rape and assault.

He also earlier admitted trying to arrange to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex.

Judge Jonathan Furness said the vulnerable rape victim “suffered degradation and humiliation”.

Nigel Fryer, defending, said the rapist had a low IQ. He had a reading age of ten and “bordered on the autistic”.

On the under-age girl offence, prosecutor Claire Wilkes said: “The person he thought he was grooming was in fact the member of a paedophile hunting group.”

Drakeford, of Cardiff, got eight years and eight months at the city’s crown court.

His father said later: “This has been a distressing period for our family. Our thoughts are with all those caught up in it, especially the victim.”
