JOAQUIN PHOENIX looked delightfully sinister as he filmed scenes for new movie The Joker in New York.
The US actor wore full clown make-up and was joined by an army of mask-wearing extras, as they caused havoc at a subway station.
The upcoming film is set in the 1980s and explores the character’s journey as he goes from failed stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck to Batman’s most notorious nemisis.
Phoenix had previously expressed interest in playing The Joker in a stand-alone movie, saying he wanted to do a character study of the comic book villain.
The actor has also been seen with a much more subdued look, sporting shaggy brown hair and wearing a brown anorak as Arthur Fleck.
The character of The Joker was last played on screen by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, to tepid reviews.

He was previously portrayed by the late Heath Ledger in 2008’s The Dark Knight, for which he won a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
The role has also been played by Jack Nicholson in 1989’s Batman and by Cesar Romero in the original television series.
The Joker is set to be released in the US on October 4 2019.
